FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 03 APRIL 2017

Pasture growth is trucking along nicely with sights of good strong clover growth, average pasture cover is lifting significantly with recent favourable conditions. The girls are holding condition well, very pleasing to walk through the herd and see good condition cows this time of year.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 15 February 2017

Matt placed 400 cows on once-a-day on the 11th Feb, same number as he did last season.

Matt has confirmed a 13% empty rate, which is an improvement from 17% the last two seasons.

Cows are still in great condition and are being fed pasture and 2kg Ingham’s Custom Dairy Pellet 2.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 18 JANUARY 2017

Moving from TopCow Complete to Ingham Custom Dairy Pellet 2 with Rumensin. This fully pelletised option offers 15% protein at a lower price break. We're aiming to hold M/S as long as we can with the challenge of summer pasture quality and quantity dropping away. With this new pellet option Matt can feed more if required during those tight summer days. Matt has zinc going into his water. We’ll monitor this moving forward before deciding whether to add zinc into the feed, as the spore counts are only sitting around 10-20,000 in Matt’s area, and bearing in mind we can only use zinc for 90-100 days. Matt has noticed some staggers amongst the girls. Again we’ll monitor this over the next week or two.  If the issue continues or gets worse, we can look at a product called Elitox to go into the feed.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 21 DECEMBER 2016

Two paddocks locked away for hay. Feeding 1.8kg in-shed of TopCow Complete. This month’s video update explains more.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 7 December 2016

Feeding 3kg in-shed of TopCow Complete.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 24 November 2016

Nearly at the halfway point for the season. The weather’s returned to more normal conditions, boosting pasture availability. We’ve dialled back to feeding 2.2kg per day of TopCow Complete in-shed.
A total so far this season of 475kg of meal has been feed to each cow. Production’s up a total of 19.1% to this time last season. Matt is on a 18 day round. Topping pasture ahead of grazing to keep dry matter content up.

The cows are well fed and doing well. Liveweight has increased on average 16kg in the last 30 days, roughly 0.5kg per day. Into week 8 of AB. Pretty happy with 78% non return rates.

Matt has now conserved 60 Ha of pit silage with another 12 Ha to be baled and wrapped the week of the 28th.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 28 OCTOBER 2016

Feeding 3kg in-shed of TopCow Complete. Cows have maintained weight, still averaging 377kg liveweight.

Conserved 50 tonne/DM grass silage in last two weeks.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 12 October 2016

WET, WET, WET!!!

Feeding 4kg in-shed of TopCow Complete, dropping down to 3kg on 13th Oct.

31% of cows submitted to AB in the first 7 days with no intervention.

Matt has closed off 25ha for grass silage.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 28 SEPTEMBER 2016

Lots of milk fever. Added magnesium to drinking water to correct this.

Lacking sunshine, impacting pasture utilisation.

Cows had a b12 shot on the 15 September as a precaution. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to reduced fertility, lower birth rates and birth weights.

Feeding 4kg plus TopCow Complete inshed.

FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE - 14 SEPTEMBER 2016

We are now using 3kg of TopCow Complete in the shed. Lots of bulling action happening in the paddock, with only 4 left to calf.

Pasture still a little low but a flush heading through now.
